Ratalaika has been doing a good job of re-releasing classic shmups lately, with releases of Gleylancer, Cotton 100% and Panorama Cotton. The developer’s newest re-release is of the Mega Drive shmup Gynoug, and it follows the trend of excellent preservation of classic shmups. This may be a no-frills release, but there is enough to enjoy here for all fans.

The re-release of Gynoug has all the same options as the previous Ratalaika re-releases, and even uses the same interface for the game. Customizable CRT shaders, rewind features and more are available in the game, with the original untouched game being available as well. These new features let players take things at their own pace and enjoy a fine shmup even if their skill level is not very high.

Gynoug is a brilliant side-scrolling shmup that makes strong uses of imagery to sell itself, such as using a mix of industrial and organic tones. The enemies come in a wide variety of forms, and some are very much out there. This is very apparent in some of the bosses which can have certain imagery of a phallic nature, and none of it is censored here.

Gynoug is not an easy game, but the additional features will help players take the time to adjust. Dying will come fast, and players will lose their power and credits, but this release urges them to continue. Even as attacks come from all sides, the player is able to maintain control thanks to the excellent responsiveness of the game, meaning this is a tit;e that is easy to learn if time is put in, showing there is a good sense of balance here.

Balance is what makes Gynoug stand out, as it doesn’t throw anything unfair at the player, and taking the time to learn to play will result in success. Bosses may pose a challenge at first, but after some time, they will be a simple matter of reflexes and memory skills to take down. What is important to be aware of are the many upgrades available, including six offensive spells, and two defensive spells, and even more power-up options and power gauges. These abilities and items are something that will make all the difference between success and failure.

Gynoug has that IT factor for a shmup and is very much worth trying out even all these years later. It may not be the best shmup, but it is definitely fun. Check this out if good skilled fun is what you are looking for.
