Around the turn of the millennium, Super Mario Bros 2 began to receive a lot of backlash due to being based on the Japanese game Doki Doki Panic. Many began writing it off as not a true Mario game, but that reputation has changed over the recent years and the game is now once again seen a worthy entry in the franchise. This has also led to many indie developers taking inspiration from the title and one such game is Onion Assault.

Onion Assault is the newest game from Hörberg Productions, the developer behind the Gunman Clive series, Mechstermination Force and Super Punch Patrol, and is a love letter to Super Mario’s USA outing. The game sees you take control of either Pelle Lök or Mama Lök and take on the invading Croquetto Army as they aim to conquer Onionia. Right from the start, you can tell the influence from the classic Nintendo title, but there is a bit more than just one title inspiring this game.

Onion Assault has the mechanics of plucking objects and hurling them at enemies, as well as picking up enemies to throw at other enemies, but the game does try and blend in other ideas as well. For instance, there are three special coins to find within every level and numerous hidden details to find. The result is a wonderful little blend of the classic side-scrollers we all loved growing up but is not afraid to add its own spin on things.

The unique platforming that Onion Assault has, is a sign that the developer understood the Nintendo magic when it comes to game design and focused on creating small but memorable experiences, rather than focusing on overly intricate level design. Playing Onion Assault feels like stepping into a lost classic and the hit detection and collision show a great deal of polish that evokes the feel of the best of retro titles. The boss fights are unique as well, and show a surprising amount of variety to them, while the stages never feel too generic and samey.

Onion Assault has that IT factor that indie games desire and most lack. The right blend of nostalgia and something new, and the right amount of smart game design and ingenuity. This is a title that is very much worth checking out as a bite-sized platformer experience for those who want to experience the classics in a new way.
