Twitch platformers are an interesting thing, you have to constantly move and everything will kill you with just one hit, while the stages are never that long. It is something that made games like Super Meat Boy a big hit, but how well does the formula do when you add in new elements? That is the question Sir Lovelot asks, as the game sends you on a quest to reach a princess’ tower in each stage before the sun goes down. You cannot go empty-handed though, as you must bring something she likes to win her affection, and that is typically an item that can be found hidden within the level.
Sir Lovelot thus brings a great deal of exploration to the levels and requires you to look for shortcuts and hidden rooms to get the gifts for the princesses. Another aspect that sets Sir Lovelot apart from other twitch platformers is that you are able to shoot at enemies and this combat element changes up the gameplay from what we are accustomed to in the genre. The shots are not all that powerful though, and enemies take a lot of hits before they go down, so this is not just a quick and easy romp.
Getting through all this will allow Sir Lovelot to reach the princess with the item, spend time with her and then proceed to quickly break her heart in order to go on and repeat the process. It is a simplistic premise, but hey to each their own. In terms of gameplay, Sir Lovelot has something to it, but the story is not gonna be everyone’s cup of tea,
The game has some truly amazing spritework that feels almost like it is too good for this game to be honest, and the character and enemy designs are all perfect. The great music also helps really set the stage for adventure, and the sound effects are well done.
All in all, Sire Lovelot may be a strange and off-beat twitch platformer, but if you do not mind the story, then it is worth a play. There is something special here with the twists on the usual genre gameplay, and the fantastic music really makes this feel epic. All in all, this is recommended to try out for sure.
