Rhythm games are not usually my forte, but I wanted to try something different with Eat Beat Dead Spike-san. The game is a spinoff to the BlazBlue series, where you play as Ragna and this is not as good as it sounds. This is going to be a very brief review as I have far more flaws found with the game than positive.
I can get the positives out of the way, in that it uses parts of the awesome soundtrack from the BlazBlue games…….and that’s it. This is not a game that I can call fun in any way. The Rhythm elements are not done particularly well and the controls are far too stiff, which ruins the entre play for a rhythm game. I found myself quickly losing interest in the game very quickly and could not figure out what was supposed to be attractive about the game.
This is a very barebones experience with limited songs, and that is a serious problem for a rhythm game since this is supposed to be music based. I often found there was no motivation to continue if I got out, and Eat Beat Dead Spike-san failed in a key mission of keeping a player invested. I get that Arc System Works makes games in multiple genres and they wanted to experiment with the BlazBlue IP a bit more now, but this is just not good at all. Uninviting gameplay, dull visuals and not enough music to keep one invested in the experience , is not a recipe for success with a rhythm game. I suggest passing on this one and there are other Arc System Works games to try out, especially on Nintendo Switch, which is what I was playing this on. If you want to experience BlazBlue, then just wait for Cross Tag Battle which is coming very soon.
