Recently PlayStation Network gamers received news, and a preview video of the upcoming Neo Geo Station titles that were going to be released. Most of the titles included upgraded versions of classic fighting games like Fatal Fury. Some of the titles were classic arcade games that included Metal Slug, and a couple of sports games. The game I was truly psyched about was the fighting game ‘Samurai Shodown’. This game has seen many past port releases including a release on the Sega Genesis console, and an arcade port as well. In my honest opinion it would have been better if it was more like the arcade version. The version that was released for the PSN had many options including an online multiplayer mode.
For the most part the options, and available tweaks were a pleasant addition to the game. While setting up your in game preferences you had options to change the screen size, ratio, control scheme, language, and even online multiplayer match settings. This may sound really good at first, but the game fails in two main areas. The first noticeable issue is the inability to properly pull of special moves that are easily performed in the Sega Genesis, and Arcade versions of the game. If that isn’t enough to turn you away from the $8.99 price tag then the following issue probably will. The worst problem I’ve found is with the online multiplayer. It’s the main reason I purchased the game, and I’m sure others bought it for the same reason. The problem takes place during an online match when a player loses. The loser of the online match will be forced to spectate as the game continues on without them. This is a major issue that should have been taken care of prior to the games release. In my opinion when a player loses they should be taken back to a gaming lobby with options to either quit, or proceed to the next match. With these two major problems I cannot recommend this game to anyone. I have no doubt in my mind that the other Neo Geo Station titles also followed the same poor example. All I can say is “Buyer Beware!”
Other Games that have been released are:
- Fatal Fury
- Alpha Mission II
- The King of Fighters ’94
- Samurai Showdown
- Baseball Stars Professional
- Magician Lord
- Metal Slug
- League Bowling
- Super Sidekicks
- Art of Fighting

The problem I have with the Neo Geo Station is that 90% of the titles they have for sale can be bought on a single disc (SNK Arcade Classics V.1) for $10 or so. Sure they added online play to the titles, but I guarantee no one is playing Fatal Fury or League Bowling online. Metal Slug seems to be the only one I’d consider buying for online play. No trophies is another negative. Now, when they start releasing the more popular games like Garou and KOF ’98, I might change my opinion.
