It’s been 18 years since the last Dragon Ball anime, Dragon Ball GT, concluded in Japan. And let’s be honest, a lot of fans would like to forget that series ever aired. The series is not considered to be canon and had very little input from the original series creator. A few years ago the Kai series began, which cuts out much of the fluff and filler from Dragon Ball Z and also redraws many scenes to give the show a shiny new coat. But not we are about to get an all new anime titled Dragon Ball Chou. Chou can be translated to “super” and it seems that the english title will infect be “Dragon Ball Super.”
Dragon Ball Chou will take place after the events of the Majin Buu saga, the last saga in the Dragon Ball Z series. It hasn’t been confirmed if it will take place before or after the recent movies Battle of Gods and Resurrection ‘F’, which are considered cannon. But like the movies, series creator Akira Toriyama will over see the new series and be heavily involved.
In an official press release from Toei Animation, Masako Nozawa, voice actress for Goku, Gohan, Gotten, and Bardock, had this to say. “I’ve used the word ‘cho’ (super) in so many commercials, games and other media, it is fantastic that the long awaited Dragon Ball Super will finally begin. I hope that this series will last a long time and have the same impact around the world as its predecessor.”
Osamu Nozaki, a producer at Fuji TV said, “As I read the plot I’ve a;ready received from Akira Toriyama, my dreams for this begin to expand. An enemy even stronger than Buu or Freeza may appear…”
Dragon Ball Chou is set to air this July on Fuji TV on Sundays at 9:00 am.
