WiiuE3It is the end of an era as Nintendo has announced the Wii U has ended production.

Nintendo of America issued the following statement to Kotaku: “We can confirm that as of today, all Wii U hardware that will be made available in the North American market for this fiscal year has already been shipped to our retail partners. We encourage anyone who wants Wii U to communicate with their preferred retail outlet to monitor availability.”

Nintendo of Japan also announced the cessation of production

The text reads, ???????? (kinjitsu seisan shuuryou yotei), which means, “Production is scheduled to end soon.” After that, the announcement reads “within Japan” (???? or Nihon kokunai).

The pictured Wii U console is the white 32GB “Premium Set” console, which is the only console listed on the Japanese website’s Wii U hardware page. The other Wii U consoles, including the black variation, are listed as “no longer in production.” In 2015, Nintendo killed off the 8GB Wii U in Japan.

In the past, Nintendo has often announced the discontinuation of hardware variations by similar notices on its official site.

This is a sad day as the Wii U was a great system. It sadly just did not catch on with consumers. It had a great library of games, including Bayonetta 2, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Super Mario 3D World and more. Let us know what your favourite Wii U games were.
