Operencia: The Stolen Sun is a fantastic RPG and one that takes place on a grid. Players travel through a bunch of locales taking on monsters and slowly but surely saving the world. This game is a challenging one if the player isn’t ready for it but can also be rather simple if the player takes a moment to think things through. The game opens up with a tutorial in which the player controls a powerful king. This king has powers and abilities that the player can earn later in the game. It sets the tone for the game and shows how fun the game can be. Though sadly, the king dies at the end of the tutorial. The player will then create their main character. Players can choose either a male or a female character. The main character is the focal point of the story, so select their stats wisely.

The maps are rather different and have a lot of areas to traverse. Players will need to walk through areas and might retread multiple times to find all of the secrets. It isn’t necessarily easy to play through the game as sometimes travel isn’t easy. Enemies will pop into view and fight the characters though completing actions will save the player’s spot. The first chapter takes place in a sunken castle. This castle is a great starting location and has hidden puzzles, princesses to rescue, and a dragon to fight. Players will slowly descend into the castle, taking on fishmen and finding new weapons and gear. This game doesn’t allow the player to return to locations, so the player ought to clear the area. Find everything worth finding and make their way to the next dungeon.

The game has a pretty solid story, and the players slowly move through different locales on a larger quest. The areas are all very different and offer up different monsters for the player to take on. There are quite a few beasts for the player to fight, and it’s necessary to be strategic. Players will need to know when to avoid battles and when to jump in and take on whatever lies before them. Players need to be aware of the fact that the only way they can heal fully is by resting by the fire. Players will collect logs to build fires and then restore their HP and MP to full. Logs aren’t easy to come by, so players need to use them wisely. I found a few in each area and stockpiled them just in case a boss was approaching and did fine.

Battles in this game are turn-based but exist in multiple layers. The fights are challenging, and often the player will face groups of enemies. Enemies can and will ambush the player too, which leads them to attack first. Players might lose a good chunk of time if they continue to get ambushed. Players can’t even escape battles, so players will need to be aware of their HP and MP. The battles can be quite rough as players have to deal with big groups most of the time. The player might face two warlords with a couple of mages and an archer supporting them. Players need to be aware of what row they are attacking and take focus.

Players will buy and find all sorts of gear. It’s important to outfit the characters with the best armor and work to keep them ready for battle. Players will consistently find equipment, which they can use to upgrade their characters. The characters will need to find better gear to survive the continuing assault of the enemies. The monsters will also get more brutal, so always outfit the characters if possible. There are also magic items the player will pick up along the way. The shovel is one of the treasures that the player will pick up. They can use this item to dig up buried treasure. It can be tedious to find a treasure as the map is often a little difficult to traverse. Luckily for the player, the shovel itself will tell the player how far away the closest chest is. The magic shovel is a great boon and will be helpful.

There is also voice acting in this game. I am a big fan of voice-acting, so every time I hear voice-acting, I am always excited. The voice acting adds to the story and brings the game up another level. I did enjoy hearing what the characters sounded like, and it made things feel a little more interesting. The voices work with the characters, and it’s great overall. The music is also great and fits with every area. Music can break a game, and this game does its best. It’s nice to listen too even after playing for a while. The levels can only be visited once through playthrough, so players shouldn’t be too annoyed in the long run.

Operencia: The Stolen Sun is a great game and one that will challenge even diehard RPG lovers. The characters are compelling, and the dungeons offer challenges and rewards. The battles are brutal yet fun, and this game will continue to test the player as they get stronger. Operencia is in trouble, will the player save it or let it burn?
