OtakuDante’s Top 10 of 2010

The year 2010 has brought with it some amazing PS3, and PSN gems. I have splurged spending the most I ever have on games, and $20 PSN cards for my PlayStation 3 console. I’ve even gone so far as to begin collecting PSN avatars. The best thing of 2010 for me is becoming one of Real Otaku Gamer’s staff. The members here have welcomed me with open arms. I’m very proud to be a part of a gaming site that has great potential!

1. Capcom_Unity’s Chance To Play Against Daigo Event:

This event takes my number one spot even though I didn’t actually get to play against Daigo. For those of you who don’t know Daigo, he is the Super Street Fighter IV master. He has been a part of tournaments, and has become quite a popular video game celebrity. The Event took place in November of this year. To be eligible for selection you had to be a part of the CapcomUnity.com forum, and you had to post a message about why you deserved to fight with Daigo. I was actually lucky enough to recieve a PSN invite, but unfortunate enough to not be selected. Daigo sent PSN, and XBLA invitations to those that replied to the contest, and would randomly choose players off of his friends list for a limited amount of time. I trained hard for hours hoping to impress him, but my chance never came. This event was extremely awesome, and some lucky players were fortunate enough to play against the master of Super Street Fighter IV. That is why it takes my number one spot.

2. Super Street Fighter IV (PS3):

As a Street Fighter fan, and player I was excited about the release of the ‘sequel’ to last year’s PS3 title ‘Street Fighter IV’. I had just got my PS3 at Christmas of last year, and the first game I had was Street Fighter IV. Needless to say I was addicted to the game. I did have to adjust to the graphics though. They were different from the Street Fighter games I was used to. When I heard they were going to release ‘Super Street Fighter IV’ with more characters, and improved online options I immediately reserved my copy. I was there on the day it arrived eagerly awaiting to get my hands on my copy, so I could play it. I was impressed by the improvements in the graphics, character roster, and online gameplay. The extra costumes that were issued later on the PSN store made it even greater. Everytime that a new costume DLC was released I would buy it that day, and I still do. Super Street Fighter IV is a solid fighter, and is worthy of my second place spot!

3. BlazBlue Continuum Shift (PS3):

You may realize by now that I’m partial to fighting games like Street Fighter IV. I currently own the first installment of the BlazBlue fighting game series, so I actually knew how the next BlazBlue game was going to be. Aksys Game’s ‘Guilty Gear’, and ‘BlazBlue’ series are heavily anime based fighting games in a style that is similar to the older Street Fighter games.  The gameplay in BlazBlue is much faster, and intense than the Street Fighter titles most gamers are used to. BlazBlue has a rocking soundtrack that keeps pace with the intense fighting experience that it brings. The second installment of BlazBlue features improved modes of play, new characters, and improved online features. After ‘BlazBlue: Continuum Shift’ was released rumors were around about new DLC characters that would be available for purchase. The characters that were spoken of were Makoto and Valkenhayn R. Helsing.  They added to the package making the title a worthy successor to the BlazBlue series. This is why It stands at my numer three spot.

4. Marvel Pinball (PSN):

Recently Zen Studios who are known for their PSN, and XBLA pinball game titles released the PSN pinball game ‘Marvel Pinball’. I was really excited since I’m both a comic book junkie, and a PS3 gamer as well. I currently own Zen Studio’s ‘Zen Pinball’ game so I knew what to expect in terms of the gameplay. I was recently lucky enough to win a code for the full game from an online contest. When I loaded the game on my PS3 I couldn’t wait to see the four available pinball tables which consisted of Wolverine, Spider-Man, Ironman, and Blade. The attention to detail, and the effects that come with each table are stunning. Anyone who has played Zen Pinball will be familiar with the gameplay mechanics. I was happy to see that they had several spots for new table additions. I cannot wait to see which character tables will be released next!

5. Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood (PS3):

This is one of those titles that I passed up for another game, and shouldn’t have. I’m fortunate that I’ll be getting this awesome game for Christmas! I’ve heard nothing but great things about this game. I have several friends who enjoy playing the online multiplayer, and I will soon be joining them. I’ve researched the game, and have found that it has different modes of gameplay, and new DLC content that is being released. I’ve also seen internet videos about the appearance of ‘Raiden’ from the Metal Gear Solid games as a playable character, or skin. That makes the game truly awesome!

6. Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare Collection (PS3):

This is another game I passed up, but will be receiving for Christmas. The actual Undead Nightmare DLC content was already available for purchase to go along with the Red Dead Redemption game, but it has recently been made available as a stand alone collection. The game is a great buy for the gamers who enjoy zombie games. The main reason I wanted it was for the multiplayer. I’m a gamer who thoroughly enjoys the social aspects of online gaming. This game provides that along with a full story driven mode which I’m dying to play!

7. Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition (TBA):

I’m a hardcore Super Street Fighter IV player, and I’m constantly keeping track of possible new DLC content releases for the game. Recently there has been ‘confirmed’ rumors of a consle port of the Japanese Super street Fighter IV Arcade Edition of the game. This is very good news considering Japan’s arcade version has new characters that include Yun, and Yang. There are also videos on the internet showing that ‘Oni Akuma’, and ‘Evil Ryu’ may be added as well. The addition of new characters would be a gamers’ dream come true! I have also watched other details from the preview videos which seemed to have different title customizations as well. Whatever the case may be I’m gonna by the Arcade Edition the day it is released!!!

8. PAC-MAN Championship Edition DX (PSN):

I was actually hesitant to purchase this PSN title. I wasn’t sure if it would be worth it. I knew the game looked awesome, but that was about the extent of it. I decided to seek out some reviews via You tube, and found out that it got some very high ratings. I went with a leap of faith, and purchased the game. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. It truly is an awesome game, and it has excellent replay value. The fact that it has lots of trophies, and modes to unlock makes the package even more worth the asking price. It was $9.99 well spent!

9. Marvel vs Capcom 3 (PS3 – 2011):

The news of ‘Marvel vs Capcom 3’ has spread wild over the internet. The rumors of the game itself was enough to get my attention. In the months following the news of the games release date the internet was filled with rumors of what characters would be included in the game’s roster. Frequently videos, and news of confirmed characters were released. New additions to the character roster like She-Hulk, Okami’s Amaterasu, Lady from the ‘Devil May Cry’ series, and even X-23 made the game seem even more amazing! Video game retailers are currently selling collector’s edition versions of the game for pre-order. With each collector’s edition of the game comes exclusive extras. This is one title that I’ll definitely  be adding to my collection of fighting games!

10. Mortal Kombat 9 (PS3 – 2011):

The game that occupies my number ten spot is last, but in no means is it the least. Like Marvel vs Capcom 3, the new addition to the Mortal Kombat series has recieved lots of publicity. It seems the good people at Midway have decided to go back to the roots of what made the Mortal Kombat games truly great. Midway has gone back to it’s 2D style, leaving the trend of the three dimensional designs of recent Mortal Kombat titles. The preview videos that are available on the internet give gamers a peek into the gameplay mechanics, character roster, and fatalities. What made the game so great to me was the online play. It’s about time a worthy Mortal Kombat title has made the online transition! I absolutely cannot wait to get my hands on this game, and make some Flawless Victories on the PlayStation Network!!!
