Owlcat Games creative director Alexander Gusev recently spoke with Polygon about Warhammer: 40 000 Rogue Trader and revealed new details about the game. Gusev confirmed that the game is based on the 2008 Tabletop RPG of the same name and its rules, and discussed how Owlcat is planning to expand on the 40K universe’s potential for exploration.

Gusev Stated: “In Warhammer every planet is basically a graveyard to civilizations. In Warhammer, if you if you find a planet that is known to be cursed, it can actually be cursed. And so on. It makes this exploration far more interesting, in my opinion, and it gives you a lot more things that can happen — and that will happen.”

Gusev also confirmed a number of figures who will be featured in the game, such as party members including a Space Wolf Space Marine, a Sister of Battle of the Adepta Sororitas, and an Eldar Ranger. He then went on to state that characters and concepts from the original tabletop game will appear as well, sometimes in cameos, such as the rogue trader Calligos Winterscale and Vladaym Tocara, liege of the interstellar port of Footfall.

Gusev then went on to note that the challenge for Owlcat so far is that the team is trying to make the turn-based game’s mechanics feel more approachable for newcomers, especially compared to Owlcat’s Pathfinder games that he feels were too crunch intensive for newcomers to get into. In his own words: ” We really want to preserve the freedom of choice, basically, of Rogue Trader and not the complexity.”
