2D platformers have been a thing for a long time, and there have been some amazing games in the genre, and some not so good ones. Then there are the ones in between, ones that are not good but not bad either and are just average When it comes to Perils of Baking, I have to say that it falls in that middle category. This is not to speak ill of the game mind you, but just to say that it lacks a certain flair.

Perils of Baking sees you take the role of a baker who must stop his brother’s evil plan. The gameplay is a basic platformer, with baked confections as enemies and items to obtain. Nothing really stands out here, and I tried to get a good feel of the game to see what made it different. I like that there is a bit of strategy to the jumps at times, but that is not really enough to set this apart. Finding certain objects opens up new secret levels that offer more of a challenge, and these do make the game interesting, but they themselves become very repetitive over time and lose their appeal.

If there is one thing that stood out, it is the soundtrack. That being said though, it did not stand out in a good way at all. The music grinded on my ears and I eventually had to shut off the volume on the Switch, just to be able to keep playing without that aggravating sound. The visuals are nothing spectacular, but are not offensive to the senses at all like the music. If anything they are just rather average for an indie game.

Rather average seems to sum up Perils of Baking, or more accurately, painfully average. The game doesn’t really step outside its comfort zone at all and plays it safe consistently. I wanted to like the game, as there are not really any faults I could find aside from the music. The overall experience though, is that of a blink and you’ll miss it game that will come and go quickly on the eShop. If you really want some more platformers to play, then sure, but otherwise give this a pass.
