Persona 4 Arena Ultimax was announced for PlayStation 4, PC and Switch at The Game Awards, but it is not going to be the version that was released on PS3 and Xbox 360.

This release of the game will include the final balance updates and changes that had been made for the arcade version, with Ultimax Version 2.00 which drastically changed how the game played.Version 2.00 was made to correct the shortcomings of the base game we received and had many changes aimed at the Shadow Type characters. The shadow versions of the characters were an addition to Ultimax that were not in the original Persona 4 Arena but were incredibly out of place and unbalanced gameplay-wise because shadow characters have more health and can use Awakening SP Skills at any time. They also contained the new Shadow Frenzy mechanic, which allowed them to cancel specials into other specials or Supers.

However, the Shadows also had a number of drawbacks including having no Burst option whatsoever, and doing 80% of the damage that their normal counterparts could output. This was all changed in the version 2.00 update, with changes such as lowering the shadow’s health and giving the ability to Reversal Burst while also seeing their attack power rise an additional 10%. Another change was that Frenzy was also overhauled to make it that activation required Burst Gauge instead of SP with the SP Gauge determining the amount of time the power-up is active and Fury made it that opponents could not Defensive Burst at all while in use.

Shadows weren’t the only things changed by the update, as the rest of the roster received a massive balance overhaul too, which will make the game very interesting when it releases on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and Steam on March 17, 2022.
