Phantom Breaker Battle Ground Overdrive is a game that begs you to play it either alone or with friends. Playing alone can be daunting as you will get hit by wave after wave of attack with no one else to take hits. Playing with friends can lead to a crazy commotion as points fly around. Truly something that I have not experience in a while, a couch co-op game that is so insane it’s amazing. PBBGO is a solid anime styled game that tasks you with taking down hordes of enemies. Using all your skills at your disposal makes for an interesting style of gameplay. I found myself generally button mashing to see what would work, as there were just so many enemies coming at me. The story is a rather simple one, as it really boils down to girls saving the world and that is a good thing.
This game is really a classic arcade styled game. You feel this sense that this game wants to be played long and hard. That you are sort of surviving on a single quarter as you progress through each level. There is something nostalgic in it that makes it even more interesting. It’s like I’m back in the arcade playing an old school game and in this day and age it really is refreshing. I hadn’t thought I’d missed it but I did, and it is good to know.
Playing this game alone is really something I hadn’t expected would be so daunting. You find yourself working through room after room, fighting baddies. As you beat them all it starts anew and soon you find yourself against a boss. These bosses can have an intense difficulty that changes the game as they may have abilities their goons did not. But, as you continue to play you learn and that makes it all the easier.
Now, personally where the true fun of this game comes in, is playing with friends. Up to three friends can join you on your journey to save the world and through co-op you begin to play differently. This is definitely where the real fun happens as with up to three friends you can destroy wave after wave of baddies. Your heroine’s begin to level up, and it is a fight to see which one will end up on top. Play wave after wave with someone who’s never played to witness them learn as they play like you did. Soon enough, while playing with my younger sister, she was surpassing my scores, and I wasn’t too upset. It was just fun to sit there and play a game that did actually end up getting harder as we progressed. It really is like an old arcade game, one where if you lose, a countdown appears letting you continue.
Phantom Breaker at its core is just a fun game. Whether you are playing it alone or with friends, you are certain to have a good time. By adjusting your characters stats through their level ups, you can make the game even more fun. Dole out extra damage and send these weirdos packing. This game is one of those odd games that I knew I’d probably like. But when I played it, I found it to be far more entertaining than I had imagined.
If you have interest in a modern yet arcade styled game, I highly suggest you get this! It really is something that, especially if played with friends, will give you countless hours of fun. So get out there, choose a character and send these villains packing!
