SNK has brought another great Neo Geo Pocket Color game to Switch with Fatal Fury First Contact as part of the Neo Geo Pocket Color Selection. This is a Neo Geo Pocket Color take on Real Bout Fatal Fury 2that like many of the other Neo Geo Pocket Color fighters, uses a super-deformed or chibi art style.

Real Bout On the Go?

Fatal Fury First Contact has its gameplay based on its arcade counterpart, but with some variations made to adapt to the controls. First Contact has only 12 of the fighters from Real Bout 2 for the single-player mode, but there is a new in for two-player mode. I do need to mention that aside from single-player mode, which is a standard 1v1 mode against the computer, and two-player mode, which a standard player vs player mode, there are no other real modes or attractions here.  Unlike King of Fighters R-2, Gal Fighters, and Samurai Shodown! 2, this is a rather basic conversion for the Neo Geo Pocket Color in terms of content. The gameplay is good, but when other games had a lot more content to make themselves stand out, you will see that this game is a bit more basic.

I do want to add that the fighting mechanics are handled well The controls are easy to learn and the fighting is smooth, using two-button inputs well. The controls depend on how you press the button and how long, in order to determine the type of attack. The gameplay will be easy to figure out if you have played other Neo Geo Pocket Color games that SNK has brought to Switch so far, such as Samurai Shodown! 2 and Gal Fighters. I will also add, that taunting is preserved in this game, and makes for some great additions to matches. The combat itself is not an issue here, and if you have a friend with you, this is a great game to play one on one for a few hours. Even with a reduced roster, the moves you can do are amazing and will keep you entertained.

Adjustable Presentation Options

Like with other Neo Geo Pocket Color ports to Switch, the game is not only emulated perfectly, but the emulator also includes some nice additions as well. Almost every aspect of the Neo Geo Pocket Color was replicated,  including the options for a system set up if you want to make changes and a Neo geo Pocket Color appears on screen for you to play the game on. You can adjust the controls as you want, adjust display options, and there is even a rewind function included. In addition, there are a variety of skins for the on-screen Neo Geo Pocket Color in the form of the various different models of the system, so you will have a nice amount of options. The manual for the game is also digitally replicated here and that is a nice touch, especially for those of you who are completists as well. As well, If you feel the screen is too small, then you can enlarge the image or zoom in to see better. I am happy that we are seeing more Neo Geo Pocket Color games come to Switch because this emulator being used is amazing.

I really did like my time with Fatal Fury: First Contact, and while I wish the game had more content when considering other Neo Geo Pocket Color fighting games, I still feel this is worth checking out. Now bring on more classics SNK!
