Miitopia may be coming out on July 28th but with the new demo, I was able to try it out for myself.
The game might seem simple at first, but in the 3+ hours I played the demo, it is anything but. This game is something that all RPG fans new and old will enjoy.
The story is a whimsical one where an evil Lord has appeared and taken away all of the Mii character’s faces. It is up to your chosen hero to stop him.
Of course, this is where the fun starts. Sure you can just cast yourself as the hero but who will be the villain? With the amount of Mii character’s out there the possibilities are endless. I chose to cast No Face from Spirited Away as my Dark Lord. But you could make it your boss, an ex, or anyone as long as there is a Mii of them.
As you play the game you meet a mayor and the villain comes to steal the town folk’s faces. This is also a fun moment as you can either cast the villagers or let spot pass do the work. I ended up having a village run by Tingle of Zelda Fame. Steve Urkel, Dr. Egg Man and Princess Daisy were also cast.
The battle system is standard RPG fare as it allows you to choose a class and fight in turn-based battles. But things can get wacky when you get more characters. When you create your characters you choose a nature. This nature can cause the characters to act out in ways you may not expect. Mixing characters and their natures will lead to different fighting styles.
My main character, for example, Stark, has the cool personality so he is just the coolest. Using his power he can find weak points when he attacks and dodges enemy attacks. So cool is a mite overpowered.
My mage character is kind so she is more apt to help out. My thief is laid back so he isn’t always excited about the battle, while my popstar is an airhead and sometimes loses focus.
This battle system makes things fun and should allow newer RPG fans to find a new game type to love. Beating enemies will free the faces and that is also a nice touch.
It really is interesting seeing what faces appear on the enemies because it makes them sometimes appear rather humorous. At one point I ended up fighting a living Boulder with Eggman’s face it was funny.
Miitopia’s fun also hinges around your characters and their relationships. If your characters like each other they will often team up and interact positively. But if their natures are at odds it may lead to trouble. Like when my laid-back thief his behind my pop star. She was certainly upset he would do this. Now I haven’t had characters dislike each other but I’m sure they end up causing problems for the person they hate.
Miitopia is certainly an RPG game for any and all to enjoy. It’s simple to a point that you can pick up and play it anytime for younger kids and busy people. Yet, it is deep in ways you may not expect.
If this game at all catches your eye, I think it is totally worth downloading the demo. Plus the save data will transfer over to the main game if you decide to buy it. All in all, I am excited to see what else this game has to offer. I really do want to take down the Dark Lord and explore this new RPG world. Since it comes out next month there isn’t long to wait.
If you like RPGs and casting your friends and literally any Mii in weird roles this game is for you. Miitopia comes out on July 28th but the demo is out now! Download it and at least start saving faces from the Dark Lord. You might just find you have spent 3 hours in the demo and you truly do want to spend more time in this zany world!
