Max the Curse Of Brotherhood is the sequel to Max and The Magic Marker, a Wiiware title from years back, and so has a lot to live up to. I was aware that the game had been out on the Xbox 360, PS4 and Xbox One before now, but I was excited to get a look at how the game plays on the Switch.

Max and the Curse of Brotherhood is a game that just lends itself well to the portable format, and I found myself getting lost in the game repeatedly. This is just a well polished game that has been refined and optimized over the years since its original release. The game doesn’t  try too hard introduce anything new to the platformer genre, but that is fine as the game’s polish makes it shine (pun intended).

I like that Max and the Curse of Brotherhood has various additions to break up the platforming, for example using the Switch touchscreen to use the marker and interact with the world. The developers really went all out to use the Switch in innovative ways, and as I understand it, this handles much better than the previous console releases of the game.

If I do have one flaw to point out with the game, it is that it feels too samey at times. While there is definitely variety here, I just feel that the game recycles some ideas from the previous game a little too often for my tastes. It isn’t bad, but it does stick out a little bit.

I must say though, that the story was well done and I found myself enjoying it immensely. Max the Curse of Brotherhood touches all the right notes when it comes to the narrative and accomplishes something few games do for me. I like that the developers put the effort into something that is usually secondary to the platforming in thee types of games, and it makes this one stand out.

I have to recommend Max The Curse Of Brotherhood, and feel it is a game all Switch owners will appreciate.
