Most games based on movies are terrible, that’s a general rule. However, occasionally one comes along that is far better than it has any right to be, These include Goldeneye for example, as well as a game based on the film Gunhed that saw a release here in the west as Blazing Lazers. Most references to the film were removed however, when the game was localized for the Turbo Grafx 16 in the west. Because of this action, the game is able to be re released without much issue unlike many other classic licensed games that still have rights issues preventing that .
Blazing Lazers is perhaps one of the best shoot em ups (shmups) ever made. It is basic when compared to one like Radiant Silvergun, but for its time it was amazing and still holds up well. The action was fast paced, with varied powerups and great enemies, not to mention excellent bosses. The game was a launch title for the Turbo GrafX 16 in America, and was a brilliant choice given that it was a fun game that held gamer’s attention. It was difficult but kept you coming back again and again, simply because it had that intangible “it factor” that is so desired in games and not always found.
Replaying the game recently, I was amazed how well it still plays and how much fun I had despite having played more recent shmups. It was simple but efficient and that made all the difference. The music was excellent and far ahead of other consoles at the time, and everything about the game just felt new. I was always upset that there was no direct sequel, but this is understandable given that the game was originally a licensed game. There was however, a spiritual sequel of sorts to the game for the Super NES. This game was called Space Megaforce, and reused many concepts, power-ups and even sounds from Blazing Lazers, I have only played that one briefly, but found it to be an enjoyable experience as well.
If you love shoot em ups, then you must give this one a try. It is available on many modern systems and there are many ways to play it. You will see why it holds up so well!
