Damsel is a game out for Nintendo Switch, starring a plucky girl who certainly doesn’t need rescuing. This girl is a tried and true vampire hunter and one that doesn’t need to be rescued. She’s going to have to watch out as the undead are out in full force and she’s on the menu. Take care and she will kill them all and go on her merry way. This game is told rather gloriously like a comic book. Players will see the story play out in comic book form before jumping into action-packed levels. It fits the energy of the game and works for it. I wasn’t expecting this format but I’m glad they went with it. I’ve always enjoyed the comic book aesthetic, so seeing it realized in a game is a great change of pace.
Damsel is a cartoony romp through a vampire infested world. It’s a 2D shooter that takes a player through a variety of locales as they kill vampires and save citizens. The backgrounds often fly by as Damsel flips and shoots, it is quite a visual treat. Plus, as players kill their undead foes, points fly off which is always a pleasant sight. Damsel is a game that takes some time to get used to. Sure, players can dash through and simply kill everything but that is no way to truly experience this game. Damsel is a game that if played right can be a full and rich experience. What may look like a simple old school action game is more expansive.
This game is all about timing and doing things right. By playing it by the book players are sure to get better scores. Which for players that want to rise the leaderboard is essential. Yes, this game does have a leaderboard which might just entice people to get this game. I’m not the type to necessarily fall into that group, but playing games like this makes me want to be. Players might also want to dive into the challenge mode. These challenges are perfect for players that have completed the main story. Just extra hard challenges for the player to take their game skills to the next level. This mode is certainly not for the faint of heart and will test everything the player learned in the main story.
The game also has a chillout mode, which is perfect for players who want to take the edge off. It’s also a great chance to practice the actions needed to rise in the leaderboards. There is always something about not dying in games that can put me into a zen state. While not nearly as fun as the less chill main mode it has it’s merits. A zen mode in such a crazy game is worth playing. The music is a gothic synth based wonderland. The music fits the vibe of the game to a tee. I wasn’t expecting to enjoy the music as much as I did, and it was a refreshing change of pace. Honestly, far better than I was originally thinking it would be. Such a precise game needs a certain type of soundtrack and gothic synth is a perfect fit.
Damsel is a game people will miss if they aren’t looking. It’s a gem hidden among the rough, and one people shouldn’t sleep on. With its solid art style and frenetic action, Damsel is worth playing. The undead is attacking in droves, will Damsel be up to save the day?
