Shoot out is a game that launched thirty-three years ago, and it is something of a relic of a bygone era. That’s not to say it isn’t enjoyable, it just takes some getting used to. As someone who was born after the fact, it might not be as exciting to me to play but this game is good if the player is willing to spend time with it. Shootout is a rather simple shooter that has a detective taking out mobsters.

The game is so classic in its action, and it plays smoothly. Though I did have trouble getting it to start because the game operates kind of like an arcade machine. Players can “insert Quarters” which allows for the player to keep playing if they die. This is an interesting feature as it brings it home that this is an old school game. The game is quick and unforgiving and won’t give players the chance to get to know the controls.

There is a practice mode which is highly suggested to be used, as the game itself really won’t hold the player’s hand. In this simple mode player’s are tasked with reaching a certain amount of points on non-lethal targets. While not perfect for training it does allow the player to figure out how the controls work and how to aim.

Shoot out is a simple game from the past and this version has kept the classic appeal of the game. Though it also adds save states in case a player has run out of patience or needs to save the game for later. This, of course, wouldn’t have been possible in an older version of the game and it is a nice thing for them to add.

Shoot out is a game that, while it might not have aged so gracefully, offers a solid gaming experience. If a player is willing to get used to the controls then they will certainly have a good time. Shoot out is definitely a game that will also hit a nostalgic place for anyone who has previously played it and that is always good in my book. There’s a dangerous world out there.  Is the player up for a shoot out?
