Lionsgate has picked up the film adaptation of the classic series Streets of Rage, with John Wick writer Derek Kolstad writing the script. This was earlier this year reported by Deadline and the project also has Kolstad producing alongside Toru Nakahara with Dj2 Entertainment’s Dmitri M. Johnson, Timothy I. Stevenson, and Dan Jevons also on board, in addition to Escape Artists’ Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, and Tony Shaw.
Kolstad said:
“When Dmitri first mentioned the idea of cracking a Streets of Rage movie, I was so immediately freaking in, and to play with Sega? The 10-year-old me is still grinning.”
It should be noted that both Streets of Rage and Capcom’s Final Fight have some cinematic roots as they both took influence from the 1984 film Streets of Fire. It will be interesting to see how this film does, especially with the success of the adaptation of Sega’s flagship series, Sonic the Hedgehog.
Streets of Rage originally saw the first three games released on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, and a 4th entry in 2020 for modern platforms that received DLC a year later.
