Rogue lite games are becoming increasingly common on the Switch eshop, and sadly most have nothing to make them stand out among the massive amount of games available. These are good games, don’t get me wrong, but many lack that hook that is needed. Then we get the rare game that decides, “the heck with it, let’s just have fun and not take ourselves seriously”. That is Streets of Rogue, a game whose hook is its wacky nature and multiple styles of play.

Streets of Rogue has a cyberpunk feel to it, but played for laughs at the same time. It isn’t exactly a parody of cyberpunk, but rather a humorous games that uses cyberpunk as its setting and derives some laughs from it.  It works surprisingly well, and offers a nice alternative to pure action games.

There are multiple classes to choose from, but most must be unlocked as you play. Each class will give you a different loadout and abilities and the game will be very different. When you unlock all 24 classes, you will suddenly find yourself with over 24 different ways to experience the game. This is not just cosmetic, but actually changes the game you play. Classes have their own missions such as a clown killing people with gag items and practicing new routines.

Of course, this is aided by the fact that the levels in the game are all randomized, so no 24 playthroughs are the same. You can try different areas as a thief for isntance and always find your loot somewhere else. Rather than serve as an annoyance like in most Rogue lites. the randomization actually fits the overall irreverent tone of the game and enhances it.  There is simply no limit to what can be accomplished here, and you can  go crazy with kills or limit them as much as you see fit. There are passive boosts you can add to a run if you want some challenge or assistance, and the mutiplayer is handled extremely well.

Lastly, I want to add that I love the art style chosen for the game. It is a great fit and goes wonderfully with the action. Overall, Streets of Rogue is an excellent game and I feel the devs have something special here. I urge you all to try this and give it my full recommendation.
