Flinthook is a game like no other and a game like every other. A contradictory statement for sure but it makes sense the more that Flinthook is played. The game, an action platformer with a pirate theme, has come to Switch and earned its way into my heart, by taking ideas other games attempted and failed at, and merges them into a coherent experience that actually plays well.
This is not a simple game, despite how it may seem, and you will find quickly just how intense this can be. Swinging from hook to hook and attacking enemies can become hectic very quickly, but the game doesn’t feel unfair at all. In fact, I would say Flinthook is a game where the level design is just as much as a character as anyone else in the game. Everything just feels so unique and different and that despite some areas seeming similar, you realize that everything is a new experience. Perhaps it is the art style, but Flinthook has a distinct charm that just cannot be denied.
If I had any complaints about the game, its that I am not sold on the music. This is not to say its bad, but I just could not get into it. When that is my only complaint about a game, it really is a good experience. Flinthook will test you and keep you hooked ( pun intended) with fun gameplay and a compelling challenge. I loved it a lot more than I expected to because I had seen some similar ideas done in other works, but as I said above, they were actually done well here. Tribute Games took the best ideas and jettisoned what doesn’t work. I cannot recommend this game enough, and I urge every Switch owner to play this at some point. You will not regret the experience.
