Teens across the U.S. are taking the “raw potato” challenge, a filmed task where the teens consume as many raw potatoes as possible.  Experts believe that this new challenge started after a few teens played too much The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and decided to consume raw potatoes, like the main character does many times in the game.

“It’s disgusting,” said one teen who wished not to be named.  “But all of my friends are doing it, so I’m going to do it.”

Although this particular challenge isn’t quite as dangerous as previous ones (like the Tide Pod and condom challenge), parents and adults are still concerned.

“I don’t really feel comfortable with teens eating raw potatoes,” said parent Barbara Sauders.  “Potatoes need to be cooked to be safe to eat.”

Experts agree.  Cooking potatoes destroys bacteria on them, and eating a raw potato can cause anything from cramps to diarrhea to even a fever.  There are two toxic chemicals (steroidal glycalkaloids and solanine chaconine) that exist in potatoes that disappear when cooked.  They act as a natural resistance against pests and disease.

Some teens, however, don’t seem to care.

“I want to be like the Dovahkiin—or Dragonborn—and if the Dragonborn eats raw potatoes during a fight.  I’m going to do the same,” argued teen gamer Jonathan Foster.  “It’s just an extension of playing the game.”
