The hip hop alien kings are back for a brand new adventure and are better than ever. In the fourth game in the series Toe Jam and Earl Back in the Groove gets these characters back to what everyone loves them for. In a quirky new adventure with a few new characters and up to four player co-op!

Toe Jam and Earl are back and trying to win over two lovely alien ladies. Toe Jam reveals he stole someone’s car and soon urges Earl to press the wrong button. The ship explodes and Toe Jam, Earl, and their lady friends are forced to find the missing ship parts so they can get home.

Players can choose from a variety of difficulty with the easier levels jokingly mocking the player. The easiest difficult being for babies, with the game saying only play if you are six and under. It is fun being poked a little when choosing such an easy gameplay level, but it is also refreshing because they want everyone who can play it.

This game plays like the classic series. Players must navigate levels walking around humans. There are traps galore and sometimes the humans will be aggressive. Each type of human will affect the character in different ways. Some will make them say things and some will go for the jugular. The player might not know exactly what the human will do until they interact with them. Though some characters fall into tropes and nothing is shocking.

This game relies heavily on presents which the player will find around the world. The player character will alert the player if they should be opening presents. The randomness of the presents is great as it adds a layer of wonder to this already weird game. Some of these presents are godsends especially if players are trying to go through the game as fast as they can.

Players will also collect money which they can use to identify presents. This is important because sometimes the presents are traps that can derail a play through. Thes traps might send players back to past floors or cause other maladies. It might even be more fun to just open all the presents and see exactly what they contain.

This game also has an online co-op mode. Players can either play with friends on their friend’s list or join people playing in public rooms. It’s great to have an open game and have players join in on the fun. Playing through the game is definitely not too challenging but adding more players is always more fun.

Toe Jam and Earl is a fun and whimsical game. These characters were great in the nineties and it is great having them on the Nintendo Switch. If players enjoyed the earlier games they are sure to enjoy this new iteration. Toe Jam and Earl are stuck on Earth, will the player help them fix their ship and get off this crazy rock?
