Duke Nukem was once the king of the shooters. A brash and bold soldier type willing to take names and kill anyone in his way. While he might not be as popular as he once was, his games are still quite fun. This game is a remake of his classic adventure made new for the 20th anniversary. It’s a great fix of a classic game with new content and plenty of mayhem to cause. Duke Nukem for the unknowledgeable was a gaming-staple years ago. A hard-hitting soldier who wants to take down the bad guys. A hero who epitomizes what made heroes cool in the ’90s While he might not be as well known now, his attitude and power are worth acknowledging. He is a true ’90s hero, and this game is a testament to that.
Players run around different areas taking down enemies. They will pick up an arsenal of guns as they take down foes. Players also have access to a kick ability which, is always usable. This kick ability isn’t necessarily the best way to play the game as it isn’t easy to land a kick when surrounded. Players will want to opt to shoot first as enemies will pop up almost out of nowhere. Duke is facing a horde, so make every shot count.
Players can also play this game with up to eight players. They can play multiplayer locally or online with a Nintendo Switch Online subscription. It’s interesting to play such an old game with multiplayer and should make for fun playthroughs. Playing multiplayer might not be for everyone, but how could players not enjoying it once and a while. If playing through story mode isn’t fun, players can also participate in a death-match. Death-match is a classic mode that pits up to eight players against each other. A brutal free for all that brings enemies and friends together for a fun face-off. Play it in between story levels or just for fun, its a blast.
Duke Nukem 3D has four classic episodes and one completely new episode. The original four are shiny and retooled. It’s great for fans of the series and new ones to try such a brutal adventure. The game has never looked better, and even with old school flair, it manages to look brand new. This game came out twenty years ago, so fans are going to be nostalgic. It’s great to see a game use this nostalgia to its benefit. While players can play the game with a fresh coat of paint, they can also play it looking like it once did. Having both versions is a cool feature and should be exciting for new and old fans alike. The fifth episode is brand new, made from the ground up. The original composer for the series has crafted awesome music, and Jon St John is back as Duke. There is new voice-over dialogue that is sure to make any fan smile. Plus, this new chapter even has a new weapon, the Incinerator. This extra content is sure to make any fan happy, and it’s nice that they put so much effort into making it.
The game is also rather interesting as the environments look as real as they could for 1996. Players will battle through many different locations that players should enjoy. It’s astonishing how many places are included, and seeing as this game is rather old, I’m super impressed. Do battle through cities, football fields, and many other locations as the killer commander Duke. This game also has all of the Switch bells and whistles. This game is playable with motion controls which, is different. Players can also aim using the gyroscopic motion controls which might help or hinder players. HD rumble also is in full effect so players can feel the action. Duke is in the modern era on the Switch so enjoy.
Duke Nukem is back on the Switch, and despite the game being a remake, it’s clear he’s better than ever. Hopefully, this game does well enough that the creators decide to bring more Duke to the Switch. This game is a solid remake, and more Duke wouldn’t hurt. Players new and old are sure to find this game to be a treat, pick it up if the player wants to crush some bad guys.
