Squid’s Odyssey is a game that is out now on Nintendo Switch. It is a game that is, in fact, a crazy turn-based RPG where the heroes launch themselves into battle and travel a world. The sea floor is littered with obstacles and enemies, and these squads of squids will have their work cut out for them.
The squid’s only way of transport is to be pulled and shot. Aiming the opposite direction is the only way to move forward. It is interesting to play a game that isn’t simply controlled, but has its own play style. The player can either use the controller or the touchscreen. The touchscreen adds an extra layer to the game and plays much better. It is definitely far more intuitive to simply use the screen not to mention far easier.
The squids also have to contend with their energy running out. The player will need to aim correctly as that is the only way for them to effectively move. The smaller squids have more energy but cause less damage as they don’t have much mass. The bigger squids have more power and often can also have more energy. It is necessary to use the squids to the player’s advantage and attack first with the big squids before coming in for the kill with the smaller squids.
The play builds a squad of 15 different squids of different classes. There are shooters, scouts, troopers, and healers. All of these squids will be useful in their own way. But with a nice diverse group of heroes the player will be able to make a squad that works for them. The characters all look great in their own way, so it won’t be hard to make a squad that really works for the player and looks good to them too.
The game itself offers about fifteen hours of gameplay with its 90 levels. Once the game is played on easy the player can jump into pro mode for 15 more hours of game play. This is of course even more challenging and could take more time, but the player should feel ready for it after completing the main story. It’s worth playing this mode if the game was fun the first time around as even more obstacles will be set up before the player this time around.
As the player goes through every level they will be working towards stars for completing levels in certain ways. Collecting all the stars the first time around will help the player not have to take on the levels again. The player won’t necessarily know which stars they will unlock and it does make completing levels multiple times worth it.
Players also gain gold while playing through the game and can buy special armor to aid their quests. There are over 65 helmets with varying affects for the player to try out. It’s pertinent to make sure the player has the right helmets equipped as that is one way to turn the tide of battle. It’s also cool because the squids will wear whatever helmet they are assigned adding another customization to find its way into the game.
Squid’s Odyssey is a game flush with levels and character. While not the greatest game in its own right, this game is a fun one. The characters are all very expressive even though they are squids. The world looks great and with such a unique playstyle this game is one to at least check out. These squids might not be ready to shoot you with ink but their heads are plenty tough enough.
