Tales of Vesperia is a celebrated game in the Tales series. It is finally time for this fantastic game to hit the Switch. Tales of Vesperia is a game that people have loved since its release. While it may be an older release it is still such a great game with amazing characters and a solid story.
Tales of Vesperia follows the story of Yuri Lowell, a young man who tried his hand at becoming a knight but soon found that even they can’t always save the world. Yuri Lowell is a man who will do whatever he can to save the people around him be they, acquaintance or friend. He is genuinely a hero and that makes him special.
Yuri Lowell wakes up one morning to the town he lives in, in distress. In the center of town lies a fountain with a magic source known as a Blastia. Someone steals this source and Yuri, being the hero he is, goes out of his way to find this thief.
On Yuri’s quest, he meets a cavalcade of characters who will join him. His trusty dog Repede the wolf-like creature who wields a blade is the first companion. He soon meets a young royal, a cowardly warrior, a genius youth, a snarky samurai, a busty beauty, a young pirate, and his heroic best friend then travel a vast world.
The story is a fun one and the characters do certainly grow as the game progresses. The energy of the game is ever present as the characters talk to each other. It’s great mixing up the party because the characters will say different things at the end of the battle. It is easy for players to lock in a set team though.
Battles are started out in the field and can be started in a couple of ways. It’s up to the player a lot of the time to lead how battles start. Yuri will eventually receive a sorcerer’s ring and using it can stun monsters. By doing so they can get an advantage over them. This is great because then they can deal early damage. Monsters can also ambush the party resulting in a random grouping of characters. It’s always best for players to play the game consciously, as ambushes can often happen in a flash.
Skits return in this game as well. Walking along the path players will be told to press a button and a skit will start. The skits are fully voiced like the rest of the game and this just adds to the magic of the characters. It’s great when the lines are read, especially when there are so many of them. They also add a lot to the story and can let players into the hearts and minds of the characters.
The Tales series has always been one of my favorites ever since I booted up Tales of Symphonia years ago. I never played this one but I knew what I was getting into. This game is like the others in that battles are graded and players should aim to get the best grade for every battle they come across.
I’ve always enjoyed that the Tales series grades every battle, there’s always a chance the player could lose or gain a lot of grade. The grade is important, especially for playthroughs. The grade shop returns and allows players to buy buffs and debuffs. These add-ons can really change how players play the game.
This game is also fantastic because it comes with all of the DLC. Though a note the DLC is locked away in the item menu if anyone was having trouble finding it. While it’s only cosmetic, the costumes provided do allow for some customization. Some of the costumes are also based on characters from other games in the series which is always cool. It’s just fun to mix things up now and again, and I appreciate that the DLC is just part of the package!
Tales of Vesperia Definitive is worth playing if the player hasn’t played it or if they are just looking for another great RPG to play on the go. The Tales series doesn’t disappoint yet again! Yuri might be a hero but he’ll need someone looking out for him, is the player up for it?
