Touhou Genso Wanderer Reloaded is a massive RPG game in the vein of Mystery Dungeon games. This game stars a character that fans of the series are sure to recognize: the precocious Reimu. Reimu finds herself stuck between a rock and a hard place when she knocks a ball from her master’s hand. In an instant, her master takes her out, and she teleports to safety.
The Touhou series is a vicious one that exists in the realm of Bullet Hell games most of the time, but this game is different. It is refreshing to play a game like this in the same world. Usually, I would have no interest in one of these games as Bullet Hell games are not my forte. But a mystery dungeon style game is a welcome change as the characters are great.
Reimu interacts with a variety of characters who can join her in battle. It is always good to think about who Reimu is going to partner with as they all have different abilities. Plus, sometimes it’s just nice to travel with whoever the player’s favorite character is. These characters can also be interacted with outside of battle and they all are quite spirited. It’s great to see them unleash their special attacks as the game uses their full art.
Tohou Gensou Wanderer Reloaded is a game that is similar to the Mystery Dungeon series. A game where players wander around vast labyrinths taking out monsters, collecting weapons, and leveling up to take out more foes. The dungeons are different and it is interesting to see how they are laid out. The player must simply travel through the dungeons and take out foes.
The characters do get hungry, and hunger constantly goes down. The player must be aware of what level there hunger is at as they traverse the dungeons. Pick up food and make sure to eat it as it will restore the fullness and stave of death. As the characters fight, they will lose HP, but walking restores it by one for every step. The battle system can go in any direction, and the player never knows where the enemy will think to attack from at times. Getting surrounded is certainly cause for concern but with a good partner its manageable.
This game looks gorgeous and it is amazing traveling through it. The backgrounds are lovingly designed and are all unique. The dungeon seems to continue on forever and not knowing the layout surprisingly adds to the fun. Traveling through the dungeons and collecting all sorts of items is par for the course and there are so many to collect. There are so many different awesome weapons to collect and its cool to see what randomly pops up in dungeons. It’s in the player’s best interest to look around every inch, as they never know what they will find.
Speaking of equipment, there are over 500 pieces of armor and weapons. These items are all unique in their appearance and some look quite cool. These armor and weapons level up as they are used and also change forms. Continue using the same weapons as they are the only way players will stand a chance. While the player’s level resets leaving a dungeon, the weapons will continue to rise. Choosing the right weapons will also give the player buffs and special abilities so its in the player’s best interest to play around with the weapons and armor.
There is also a fusion mechanic called Nito Fusion. This can be done anywhere and allows for amazing things to happen. Fuse items together and find out what will be born from the pairing. Use it’s mix power to follow recipes and turn the tide by bringing out healing items and other helpful things. It’s cool that this game allows for fusion anywhere as past games required a specific place to fuse.
Tohou Gensou Wanderer Reloaded is a game that thrives on insanity and the characters are certainly no different. These characters all have huge things on their heads like bows or even eyeballs on their hats. While there isn’t an English voice acting the Japanese voice acting does work well. I might be disappointed personally, but the lack of English voice acting doesn’t prove a big issue anyway.
The game also contains all the DLC from the games. That’s four extra stories, and any of the characters become playable. There is Miracle Ambitions, starring Sane Kochiya and Suwako Moriya and the King of Fairies starring Marisa Kirisame and Alice Margatroid. There is also Futo Monobe and the 7 trials starring Futo and Tojiko Soga and lastly The Bullet Reporter Starring Aya Shameimeru and Momiji Inubashiri. With these four extra stories the game adds even more play time and allows the players to enjoy these lovable characters even more.
Tohou Gensou Wanderer Reloaded is a stellar game that makes the series more accessible. It is true that bullet hell games are not for everyone. This game is an excellent introduction to the world and characters and could lead fans down the rabbit hole. Reimu needs the player’s help to save the world, the question is, can the player help her?
