Sometimes YA literature is most appealing to its direct audience: young adults, obviously.  However, there are tiles that seem to transcend the main audience to a much larger one.  Warlocks of the Sigil (Book 1 in the Sigil Series) by Peri Akman is one of those fun fantasy books that both you and your tween and teens will adore.

Quinn lives in a world where people with magical abilities are carefully monitored by the government.  Anyone showing magical abilities must got to a school for Warlocks where they will learn how to control their abilities as well as keep themselves and the world around them safe.  But this is just the start to the adventure.

Upon “graduation” of the school, students are set up with experienced warlocks as a sort of apprenticeship deal, where they will learn to use magic with real world applications.  Unfortunately for Quinn, he is picked by the craziest one of them all: Kole.  Not only is she quirky, but she’s got tons of secrets, making for an interesting match.  The book follows the two as Quinn tries to figure out where his place is as a warlock and what his true magic calling will be.

Oh, yeah!  It’s got monsters and demons and tons of fighting and intrigue.  Trust me, if my little blurb sounds interesting, you’ll love this book.

The story is well-written and progresses at a quick pace, making for a fun read.  The dialogue is witty, and the main character, Quinn is definitely relatable.  Like many YA reads, it’s a coming of age tale, yet it doesn’t feel trite.

If you are looking for a new fantasy series to get into, or if you have a younger who has gone through all the traditional YA titles and wants something new, I highly recommend Warlocks of the Sigil.  I cannot wait to get my hands on the next book in the series.
