The Nintendo Switch is an interesting beast. A hybrid system that is both a handheld and a home console, there is a lot of potential with the system that developers are still exploring. When it comes to making better use of the system’s handheld mode, many developers seem somewhat reluctant to pursue a handheld only game, which is disappointing. It is therefore very welcome when a developer brings such a game to the system, as is the case with Severed.

Severed is an interesting game in its own right. It relies heavily on touch controls and has neat puzzle elements, but what I found most appealing was the atmosphere. The game’s setting is a character in its own right and does a great job of immersing you into the game world. This is not a cheap mobile game, but one that takes advantage of what the Switch has to offer.

Combat and puzzle solving are all in real time, and involve the Switch touch screen. This seems simple, until you realize that enemies will come at you from all areas. You need to be both fast and aware of your surroundings if you will survive. In addition, the battles get much more intense as the game goes on. Every enemy attacks differently, and you need to learn the patterns and also be able to respond to more than one enemy type attacking from all directions. You must quickly learn to sever the different parts of the enemies in order to defeat them. It may take time to get used to, but that is okay.

Not much is different from previous releases, but that is okay. The combat is all here, exploring and solving puzzles to figure out what happened is all here, and best of all, the controls feel better than ever. I do not know what, but it feels like there is even less delay in this version of the game, than any other port I have played. The basic plot is about a girl who has lost one of her arms and then her family went missing. She then goes off in search of them, and journeys into the gruesome world of Severed. I must note that despite the stylized visuals I mentioned, this is not a game for kids. Some of the imagery is gory, and it is clearly intended for an older audience.

With stylized artwork and a great soundtrack, Severed is definitely a game I had a good time with. I want to see more games like this that take risks on the Switch. I recommend this to all seeking something new, as it is an experience you will not forget.
