Story:

You play as Atma, a high school kid navigating his way through life and his relationship with a unique girl named Raya.

Gameplay:

A Space For The Unbound is an adventure game that has you completing tasks to progress through the story. You play as Atma, a high school kid, as he moves through life trying to sort things out along the way. You interact with those around you by engaging in conversation and helping them through their problems while navigating your own. You might find an item that will help you engage in a conversation that leads to furthering your relationship with another character or progresses the story.

Atma can dive into the hearts of people that he meets to help them sort out internal problems or understand their feelings. Space diving as it’s called, has you diving into the hearts of characters to solve object puzzles. These are solved by interacting with objects in a certain order to obtain a desired result. This in turn helps the character either by falling asleep for example, or understanding why they are feeling the way they are so that they can move on with their day.

Graphics and Performance:

The game features a beautiful 16-bit, hand-drawn art style that feels like an interactive anime met with a manga. Animated NPCs are set against static set pieces with objects in areas that are sometimes subtly animated to bring life to the environment. Weather effects like rain falling from the sky, puddles forming on the ground, and hearing the sound of your footsteps as you run across the rain-soaked ground is also a neat touch.

Cutscenes in the game are static with text, punctuated by animated elements to help emphasize key scenes. These scenes also feature animated emojis and icons to portray characters’ emotions while speaking to each other.

Sound:

The music in the game is for the most part ambient and soothing, picking up tempo and sometimes changing entirely when needing to as a means to emphasize story and game elements. Environmental sound effects of rain falling, running through puddles, and interacting with objects, all help to really enhance the players’ experience.

Conclusion:

I don’t care too much for adventure games, but this game is extremely well done. The game is very well written with a story that is easy enough to follow. Situations that the characters find themselves in are very easy to relate to and make it hard not to have an emotional attachment to them.

The attention to detail in the game is incredible in every aspect. If you’re a die-hard adventure game fan, this is a game that is not to be missed! Even if these games aren’t a genre you would typically play, I would encourage you to give this game a try.
