Have you ever wanted to fight a hero? It might not be easy, but someone has to take on the hero. Wunderling does just that it tells the story of a small-time goon who, lucky for him, has finally learned how to jump. In a platforming game where this newbie is learning to do something so basic, will he be able to take down the hero? This game is a different type of platformer and is quite fun. Our hero starts his journey in his spot; he’s basically a Goomba from the Super Mario 1. Soon though, he meets his arch-rival a carrot and the actual hero. The big bad, a witch, gives him the ability to jump and sends him off to take down the hero. It’s quite a twist though the game wouldn’t be possible without it. The witch wants to see what will happen, and there’s even a bit of humor to this game.

Players will head out to complete levels where they will continuously move. They can’t stop moving, so they must time jumps well. Players will find themselves faced with a bunch of different puzzles and will need to figure them out to move on. The puzzles aren’t necessarily actual puzzles, but figuring out how to get through areas, collect all the flowers and find the treasure is puzzling at times. Players can even decorate their little hero with different cosmetic items. These items are hidden within the levels and often are easy to miss. While it’s often easy to rush to the end, the player should take time to collect all of the outfits hidden around the area. Even though they are just cosmetic, customization always makes things more fun.

The game’s style is aesthetically pleasing too. The main character looks like a villain, and that tracks. This game is colorful and fun, filled with weird characters and lovely scenery. It’s cartoonish yet vibrant and does resemble, in a way, the old worlds of Super Mario. Wunderling is a solid platforming adventure that puts the player in the role of a minor villain. It’s great seeing a different perspective, and I honestly wish there was a game that let player’s play as an actual Mario Goomba. But at least we have Wunderling, a game that not subtly takes this idea and makes it it’s own.

Wunderling is a fun little platformer that any player might eat up!
